IBIZA COMMISSIONS
The Ibiza Commissions represented a rare opportunity. Ibiza, a small Island in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Barcelona, is rich in cultural layering. This has come about because of its positioning on a major trade route, resulting in many invasions over a long period of time. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Spanish and Moors have all left their cultural footprints on the small Island.
I have always drawn a long bow as regards Art History, Philosophical ideas and History in general, all are major influences on my sculpture. The notions of maintaining the lessons of Mythology in our culture and of not cutting ourselves of from the past are two central themes of my sculpture. I am an artist who openly acknowledges and is inclusive of the past in relation to making Contemporary Sculpture. Ibiza is, as I realized on an exploratory trip there in April 2004, a rich cultural and historical stage on which to place sculptures which explore these themes.
